What is 3G?

Cellular mobile services were initially offered using analogue radio technologies and these were considered as the first generation systems (1G). The definition of 2G was straight forward because analogue radio networks were replaced with digital ones (2G networks) in the 1990’s. Mobile phones and wireless devices using 3G, send and receive data much faster than second generation (2G) systems enabling many more features and applications to be possible. It enhances the services such as multimedia, high speed mobile broadband, internet access with the ability to view video footage on your mobile handset.

With a 3G phone and access to the 3G network you can make video calls, watch live TV, access the high speed internet, receive emails and download music tracks, as well as the usual voice call and messaging services found on a mobile phone.

In technical terms, 3G is a generic term covering a range of wireless network standards & technologies including;

• CDMA – Wideband Code Division Multiple Access
• CDMA2000 – Code Division Multiple Access 2000
• UMTS -Universal Mobile Telecommunications System
• EDGE – Enhanced Data for Global Evolution
• HSPA – High Speed Packet Access including HSDPA and HSUPA

While 2G had evolved as a digital version of 1G analogue Radio network, its focus was initially into voice calls only.  However over the period, due to requirement for internet connectivity when one is on the move, the technologies such WI-MAX, WI-FI etc were made part of 2G for mobile for internet/data service.

But with its mediocre data speed ranging from 56 kbps to 160 kbps, it was not serving the real purpose of internet usage.  Whereas in the case of 3G, the technology itself is well oriented on data transfer in considerable bandwidth.  This has made the concept of faster wireless connectivity a reality.

How does 3G work?

3G, or third generation networks, operate in a different way to 2G networks. When a call is made on 2G, a line is held open for the user’s conversation throughout the duration of the call. With 3G networks, the data sent across them is divided up into little ‘data packets’ which are reassembled in the correct order at the receiving end.

This smart encoding means more data can be sent and it is sent more efficiently. In addition, 3G handsets can be in contact with more than one base station at a time and this provides improved performances in voice quality and data rates.

3G is also called as “mobile broadband” because the evolution is similar to the difference between dial up internet and the always available broadband internet services.

The following are some of the services that could be provided through 3G

• Voice and Video calls
• Mobile TV
• Mobile Internet
• Mobile email
• Mapping and GPS applications

What is Required for Using 3G?

The first thing you require is a device (e.g. a mobile phone) that is 3G compatible. This is where the name 3G phone comes from – a phone that has 3G functionality.  It’s nothing to do with the number of cameras or the memory it has.

3G phones commonly have two cameras since the technology allows the user to have video calls, for which a user-facing camera is required for capturing the image from the front.

You need to be subscribed to a service provider to get 3G network connectivity. We often call this kind of service a data plan or network plan.

Your device is connected to the 3G network through its SIM card (in the case of a mobile phone) or its 3G data card (which can be of different types: USB, PCMCIA etc.), which are both generally provided/sold by the service provider. Through that, you get connected to the Internet whenever you are within a 3G network.

3G in India

As such, Only BSNL & MTNL are providing 3G services in India that could be availed through 3G mobile phones.  As a part of their 3G service BSNL and MTNL provide pure wireness internet connectivity for our PCs and laptops  which could be availed through 3G Data card.  In this 3G data card segment the private operators such as TATA Indicom, Reliance, MTS etc are also in the fray.

Presently the transfer rate for 3G networks is around 384 kbps (kilobits per second) and it will be between 128 and 144 kbps  when you are out of city.

4G

We the people in India are yet to be familier with devices that uses 3G technologies thanks to the very slow speed in which our policy makers work for allocating 3G spectrum to the service providers.  Unfortunately a new technology like 3G is yet to invented to increase the speed our beloved politicians and policy makers.  Jokes apart,  network specialists are on the way to launch another new mobile technology called 4G which would take the basics of 3G and yet amplify its quality.

Experts say once the stage is set, 4G would offer 100 Mbps to roaming mobile device globally and around 1 Gbps to a stationary device. Here’s how it works: In Google Wave you create a wave and add people to it. Everyone on your wave can use richly formatted text, photos, gadgets, and even feeds from other sources on the web. They can insert a reply or edit the wave directly. It’s concurrent rich-text editing, where you see on your screen nearly instantly what your fellow collaborators are typing in your wave. That means Google Wave is just as well suited for quick messages.  It allows for both collaboration and communication. You can also use “playback” to rewind the wave and see how it evolved.

Google has planned to make the code open source as a way to encourage the developer community to get involved and they are inviting developers to add all kinds of cool stuff.

How internet works?  Though we use this service regularly, we are not much conversant about what happens exactly inside when we request for a web page by typing an address in the browser or while sending an email.  Here is a brief know how.

Because the Internet is a global network of computers each computer connected to the Internet must have a unique address. Internet addresses are in the form nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn where nnn must be a number from 0 – 255. This address is known as an IP (Internet Protocol) address.

The picture below illustrates two computers connected to the Internet; your computer with IP address 1.2.3.4 and another computer with IP address 5.6.7.8. The Internet is represented as an abstract object in-between.

If you connect to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP), you are usually assigned a temporary IP address for the duration of one time connection with ISP.

So your computer is connected to the Internet and has a unique address. How does it ‘talk’ to other computers connected to the Internet? An example should serve here: Let’s say your IP address is 1.2.3.4 and you want to send a message to the computer 5.6.7.8.

TCP/IP

The message you want to send is “Hello computer 5.6.7.8!”. Obviously, the message must be transmitted over whatever kind of wire connects your computer to the Internet. Let’s say you are connected to your internet service provider through broadband modem from home and the data you want to send or receive must be transmitted over the phone line. Therefore the data  must be translated from alphabetic text into electronic signals, transmitted over the Internet, then translated back into alphabetic text. How is this accomplished?   Through the use of TCP/IP Protocol. If minute details are omitted, explaining of TCP/IP would be simpler. It’s a common procedure that both the computer use to send or receive data it.

If we were to follow the path that the message “Hello computer 5.6.7.8!” took from our computer to the computer with IP address 5.6.7.8, it would happen something like this through TCP/IP Protocol.

• The message would start at the top of the protocol stack on your computer and work it’s way downward.
• If the message to be sent is long, each stack layer that the message passes through may break the message up into smaller chunks of data. This is because data sent over the Internet (and most computer networks) are sent in manageable chunks. On the Internet, these chunks of data are known as packets.
• The application layer is nothing but Protocol (or procedure) specific to applications such as WWW, e-mail, File transfer protocol etc., that we use while using internet. The packets would go through the Application Layer and continue to the TCP layer where each packet is assigned a port number. Ports are unique numbers used by a particular program and as you know many programs may be using the TCP/IP stack and sending or receiving messages in a particular computer in a particular time. We need to know which program on the destination computer needs to receive the message because it will be listening on a specific port. After going through the TCP layer, the packets proceed to the IP layer. This is where each packet receives it’s destination address, 5.6.7.8.
• Now that our message packets have a port number and an IP address, they are ready to be sent over the Internet. The hardware layer takes care of turning our packets containing the alphabetic text of our message into electronic signals and transmitting them over the phone line.
• On the other end of the phone line your ISP has a direct connection to the Internet. The ISPs router examines the destination address in each packet and determines where to send it. Often, the packet’s next stop is another router. More on routers and Internet infrastructure later.
• Eventually, the packets reach computer 5.6.7.8. Here, the packets start at the bottom of the destination computer’s TCP/IP stack and work upwards.
• As the packets go upwards through the stack, all routing data that the sending computer’s stack added (such as IP address and port number) is stripped from the packets.
• When the data reaches the top of the stack, the packets have been re-assembled into their original form, “Hello computer 5.6.7.8!”

This amazing video will explain the journey of packets from one computer to the other.  Listen carefully, data that broken into different kinds of packets such as TCP packet, UDP packet etc and the equipments such as router, switch etc that are used to transmit these packets have been animated as different characters and named as warriors in this short film.  After watching this video you will have an idea about the complexity in transmission of data over internet.  And it’s also sure that you won’t complain anymore while your connection is slow.

Scientists in advanced materials and electrochemistry have produced Electric Storage batteries what could be the single most important breakthrough for clean, alternative energy.

It’s a new generation of deep-storage battery that’s small enough, and safe enough, to sit in your basement and power your home.

It promises to nudge the world to a paradigm shift as big as the switch from centralized mainframe computers in the 1980s to personal laptops. But this time the mainframe is electrical grid; and the switch is to personal power stations in millions of individual homes.

The battery breakthrough comes from a Salt Lake company in United States of America called Ceramatec.  They have developed this new disc-shaped battery that can store up to 20KWh of electricity, enough to power an average home for most of the day.

Ceramatec’s new battery uses a thin ceramic membrane that is sandwiched between the sulphur layer and the sodium layer, enabling the battery to run at less than 200 F. Only positive sodium ions can pass through, leaving electrons to create a useful electricity.The company claims that the new batteries will be available on the market by 2011, and will sell for about $2000.

The most energy-dense batteries available today are huge bottles of super-hot molten sodium, swirling around at 600 degrees or so. At that temperature the material is highly conductive of electricity but it’s both toxic and corrosive. You wouldn’t want your kids around one of these.

The essence of Ceramatec’s breakthrough is that high energy density (a lot of juice) can be achieved safely at normal temperatures and with solid components, not hot liquid.

Ceramatec says its new generation of battery would deliver a continuous flow of 5 kilowatts of electricity over four hours, with 3,650 daily discharge/recharge cycles over 10 years.

These batteries are to be charged through solar panels or windmills to make a home completely not depending on conventional electricity through grid. If you could produce these type of non-conventional energy that’s enough to charge these innovative batteries. The charged batteries would take care of your electricity needs.  Ceramatec’s battery breakthrough now makes that possible.

Now Google has announced recently a natural extension of the Chrome project: an operating system for netbooks. Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year google will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. The open-source Chrome OS will consist of a Linux kernel with the Google Chrome browser running on top inside an entirely new desktop environment.

As people use more and more web applications, the operating system becomes less important and it makes no sense to pay for it. The desktop mail client could be replaced by Gmail, the calendaring application could be replaced by Google Calendar, the office suite has lightweight alternatives: Google Docs and Zoho, it makes more sense to use an online feed reader like Google Reader, your scientific calculator is less powerful than Wolfram Alpha and you’ll rarely need a video player when you have YouTube, Hulu and other video sites.

This technology no doubt has created a serious competition for Microsoft’s Windows Operating Systems. In future every Computer installed with Google Chrome OS need not have Windows OS and Office.

According to google, speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. It’s meant to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as they did for the Google Chrome browser, they are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

In short if Google manages to create an OS that’s simple, fast and with great user interface, it would just click.

Since micro-fuel cells can generate up to three watts of electricity, they could be used in mobile devices. The new fuel cell could power a handset for ten hours, twice as long as rechargeable batteries.

When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas.  The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power.  Other fuel cells need methanol to produce hydrogen, while Samsung’s needs only water.

The basic idea is a catalyst splits the water into hydrogen and oxygen without the need for additional energy, and the pure hydrogen is used in a thin film fuel cell producing two watts, enough to charge a cell-phone in 120 minutes.  It is probable that this isn’t a true catalyst and must be occasionally replaced.

Water-powered handsets are expected to hit the market by 2010.  If the user uses the phone for four hours a day on average, they would have to change the hydrogen cartridge about every five days.

Later handsets will be developed that don’t need the hydrogen cartridges to be changed, and would only need to be filled with water.  So time will come when you’ll need to put some water in your cellphone and you’re good to go.
